Common Sense

“Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.”

The Power of Common Sense
By Oswaldo Koch

Common sense depends on keeping things simple, applying experience and general knowledge for solving current or future problems. Tom Peters admits that most of the advice he gives to audiences is common sense. So why is he the world's leading business speaker? Some of the reasons are: you felt connected and uplifted while you were listening. You came away feeling inspired.

When you listen to a person that uses common sense, you are touched in some way. The use of common sense makes thinks obvious to everybody. Maybe because common sence is something we already know intuitively. Or maybe because common sense is something most people have experience with predictable good results. In any case, common sense make you feel connected and inspired to learn, to experience and take action to implement new ideas or best practices. The following 5 steps will help you use common sense:

  1. Connect with people in your community. It's common sense to be a part of your community; unfortunately many people prefer to stay home watching TV instead of attending a community center where can socialize and practice sports with others around them. Connecting with others in your community is part of being human, of relating, and of opening yourself up to sharing and generosity.

  2. Use affirmative thinking. This is the way of perceiving yourself and others in a positive manner, always looking to see the best in others and yourself. Positive thinking really does change your brain. Not in some magical kind of way, but in a real physical way. It means that our thoughts can change the structure and function of our brains when we make a conscious decision about who or what we will allow yourself to be influenced.

  3. Do less, think more. Most people work harder and longer without taking time out to reflect We live in a culture that valorizes over-busyness. When it comes to getting things done we have to emphasize quality over quantity. Having time to think is as vital a part of the creative process as the actual time we spend engaged in tasks and trying new things.

  4. Trust yourself. See your mistakes as gifts. They're valuable learning experiences because we learn the most from the things we do wrong. Nurture yourself by eating right, exercising regularly and taking time out to relax. You can't trust yourself when you're on edge or feeling guilty. Allow yourself engaging in physical and mental activity you enjoy such as hobbies.

  5. Be resourceful. Resourcefulness is about being able to thrive under difficult conditions and still prosper and not feel deprived. Resourcefulness is a key part of using common sense, and above all, it is the clever, creative use of resources.
