Know thyself - The
power of self-knowledge
by Oswaldo Koch
The
Ancient Greek maxim "know thyself", was inscribed
in the forecourt of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi.
Know thyself has had a variety of meanings attributed
to it in literature; the maxim is applied to those whose
boasts exceed what they are; the maxim is a warning
to pay no attention to the opinion of the multitude.
Know thyself is about understanding what we value most,
learning about what is most important to us and why
it's important to us. Know thyself is a journey of knowing
and understanding our belief system, the self-knowledge
of beliefs that empower us and beliefs that prevent
us from achieving what we want from life.
In
developing greater understanding of our thoughts and
actions, we must recognize both our strengths and our
weaknesses. Nobody likes to admit their weaknesses.
Yet, when we gain self-knowledge - both appreciating
our strengths and confronting our weaknesses - we are
opening up new possibilities for personal growth. Self-knowledge
can also help us be more efficient and focused in producing
change because we'll know precisely what we need to
work on.
Be
open to change. We are always in the process of change
both physically and environmentally. When weaknesses
are identified, it doesn't mean that we're incapable
of change. Rather than being uncomfortable with facing
our weaknesses, we have to be willing to consider the
information in a positive and constructive way. It may
be that we haven't had to use these skills well enough.
As
we grow and mature we will have many different experiences
and those experiences will help us gain self-knowledge.
Books, articles, and workshops by experts may offer
information, perspectives, and insights that can help
us gain self-knowledge, be more efficient, creative
and focused in developing new skills and positive habits.

Be
Proactive
Being
proactive means taking conscious control over your life,
setting goals and working to achieve them. Instead of
reacting to events and waiting for opportunities, you
go out and create your own events and opportunities.
Being proactive means that instead of merely reacting
to events as they happen, you consciously engineer your
own events.
For
example: A healthy style is not about strict diets,
staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself
of the foods you love. Rather, it's about feeling great,
having more energy, and keeping yourself as healthy
as possible- all of which can be achieved by being proactive
and planning your daily activities. You can change the
way you are eating, and start training more regularly
to achieve your goals. Every day is an opportunity to
feel amazingly well about you.
